August Update

“When I sing a tune, the lyrics are important to me. Most of the standard lyrics I know well. And as soon as I hear an arrangement, I get ideas, kind of like blowing a horn. I guess I never sing a tune the same way twice.” — Sarah Vaughan

The end of summer is near! And, my, what a summer it has been!

I have had the absolute pleasure of being a part of a few adventures this past month or so, and I am so excited to share a bit about them with y’all.
1. Laguna Festival of the Arts/Pageant of the Masters
2. Recording Session with Tony Guerrero and friends!
3. Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition

1. Laguna Festival of the Arts Rising Star Series

As many of you know, I was invited to be a part of the Rising Star series of the Laguna Festival of the Arts this past July! I was informed that I would be singing along side 3 other vocalists, and I was floored to find out who they would be!  Here are some photos from that show, shot by photographer, Jack Cohen.   =D

2. Recording Session at Master Recording Studios with Tony Guerrero and Friends!

We went in with the goal of recording three tunes which would serve as my submission to the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and ended up with 13!  This means that there will an album available for purchase very soon!  I will keep you all updated on that. =D  At my side, or rather, in my headphones, were Bradley Young, Jon Stuart, and Benjamin May.  Having musical magicians with me in a situation where we can’t actually look at each other and are making up arrangements on the spot is an ADVENTURE!  Here is a list of the tunes we recorded and some photos from the session: Lullaby of Birdland, Black Coffee, Beautiful Friendship, My One and Only Love, One Note Samba, Smile, All of Me, Fever, Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me, Why Don’t You Do Right, Close Your Eyes, My Romance, This Can’t Be Love.
We will be doing some fundraising in order to get the record fully realized (fine tuned and mastered) but in the mean time we will be releasing an EP with 6 tunes from the project on it within the next month or so to tide you over. They will be available to purchase in CD form but you will also have the option to download the tunes straight to your device…as soon as we get all of that figured out =D. Stay Tuned!
Here are some goofy photos and maybe one or two serious ones.

My kind of peeps=D

3. Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition

If you are on Facebook than you already know that I have done this crazy thing! I have entered the “SASSY Awards” competition! This year marks the 5th annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition held online for the first several rounds. Contestants are asked to upload 3 recorded tunes, one of which must have been recorded by Sarah Vaughan at one point in her career. A video can also be provided for viewing as part of the competition but is not necessary.

As mentioned in section #2, I spent the day in the studio with the guys recording tunes to upload to the competition website:

Please visit the website and VOTE for ALL FOUR TUNES **three are mp3 tracks and one is a video** because this is how I will move on to the next round! The top five finalist will be flown to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center for the final, live competition and the winner will be awarded $5,000 and offered a recording contract with Concord Music Group.

Lia Booth: Square One Jazz will not be at Baci this month. Stay tuned!

The Spare Buttons: Thursday evenings in Belmont Shores on 2nd street. Corner of 2nd and Nieto. 7-9 pm. Check the website calendar to confirm.
